"Picture of A Thousand Words" Mixed Media (Computer Graphics and Interactive Video) 2007 |
 |
As you look at the picture, you are interacting with the words in real-time. The brightness of your image determines the words to be displayed. The texts are selected from poems written by Li Bai (李白, 701-762AD, a famous romantic poet during the Tang Dynasty 618-907AD).
Each Chinese character (sinograph) is a word with its own meaning. The font rendered here is "classical stone-carving font", commonly used on seals during that period.

"Memory Collage" Mixed Media (Computer Graphics and Interactive Video) 2007 |
 |
The larger image resembles the viewer in front of the mirror. It is actually an ever changing video collage. Upon closer examination, each smaller image is what this mirror sees from moments in the past. It takes a snapshot whenever large motion is detected.
The artwork is organic and evolves with time constantly. It is a collaboration of the mirror, the current viewer, and viewers in the past and in the future.

"Monet & Mondrian in Motion" Mixed Media (Computer Graphics and Interactive Video) 2007 |
 |
As you enter the scene, each of your captured image is painted with thousands of impressionist strokes. Your motion determines how broad the brush will be used - a more energetic motion results in a more abstract painting. The stunning and beautiful images created by
you are living, organic, and ephemeral.
Photo-realistic rendering and high-definition imageries are commonplace nowadays. Just as the invention of cameras in the 19th century has overshadowed many detail oriented renaissance painters and sparked the school of impressionism painters, Joe is exploring this other end of the spectrum - how to make pictures more abstract and artistic, not more realistic and mechanical.

 |
In another realization, the image is painted with thousands of Mondrian style squares. Your motion determines how large the square will be used - a more energetic motion results in a more abstract painting.

"Space-Time Portal" Mixed Media (Computer Graphics and Interactive Video) 2007 |
 |
The viewer controls the playback of a pre-recorded video clip. The video frames are deconstructed and the timeline is rearranged as the 3rd dimension in space.
The first realization is a "time slice" device. As the viewer moves "in and out" of the scene, portions of the video will move "forward and backward" in time. The resulting imagery is intriguing and aesthetic and could be called "video cubism".
|
 |
The second realization is a cone-shaped "time magnifier" or "black hole" controlled by viewer's motion around the scene. Shall we call it "video spherism"?

"Shower of Words" Mixed Media (Computer Graphics and Interactive Video) 2007 |
 |
As you enter the scene, you interact with the words falling from the sky. They may bounce off from you, settle on you, or eventually fall off from you.
The texts are selected from poems written by Li Bai (李白, 701-762AD, a famous romantic poet during the Tang Dynasty 618-907AD).
Each Chinese character (sinograph) is a word with its own meaning. The font rendered here is "semi-cursive script font", commonly used on handwriting during that period.
